My Intro to Rally - 8

This is the 8th edition of the Introduction to Novice Rally

We’ll be discussing more on Scoring and some turns, along with a sign that  has 4 sits!

Let’s look over the Minor Deductions this time.  These errors are more subtle and some handlers don’t even know they are doing them.

You’re in the ring to enjoy your teamwork as best as you can.  Let the judge do the scoring.  If, for some reason, your dog is having a bad day, (or you’re having a bad day), you can just look at the judge and THANK THE JUDGE, and leave the ring – no questions asked.  You will get an NQ, but this it may be more positive, for both of you, than continuing.

Chapter 2, Section 30 Scoring.
Minor Deduction (1-2 points) for each of the following:
• Dog interfering with handler
• Handler error
• Knocking over a sign or holder
• Out of position
• Poor sits
• Slow or delay or resistance to respond
• Tight leash
• Touching or ticking a jump or pylon
• Touching the handler
Minor or Substantial Deduction (1-10 points) for each of the following:
• Excessive barking
• Handler error
• Hitting the jump
• Lack of briskness
• Lack of control
• Lack of teamwork
• Loud command or intimidating signal
• Patting/clapping in Excellent and Master – per occurrence
• Pylon knocked over in Figure Eight, Spiral, Serpentines, Send Away or Cloverleaf
• Retry of a sign — only one (1) retry of each sign will be allowed unless otherwise stated. Retry of a sign is an automatic 3-point deduction.  There are no retries in the Master class.

ON TO A FEW TURNS AND SITS!!

Here are 5 Novice Rally signs we’ll work on this time.

Here’s a course with these signs in it that you can set up to do.  There’s a lot of space on the course after sign #25.  This is because you will be taking 6 steps forward while performing this sign.

Signs #s in course order
Principal Parts are Underlined.

SIGN #25. HALT - 1, 2 and 3 Steps
K9Rally Video:
https://youtu.be/CZ6cufnfO4s
Description: While heeling, the handler halts and the dog sits in heel position. The handler takes one step forward, halts and the dog sits in heel position. The handler takes two steps forward, halts and the dog sits in heel position and then three steps forward, halts and the dog sits in heel position. The dog moves with the handler each time. (Stationary)
Notes: Dog MUST move with Handler.  There are 4 halts in this exercise.  Your dog must sit 4 times in this exercise. This may be a difficult sign for some dogs.  There’s a lot of sitting.  Help your dog through this with some rewards when you first begin to teach so many sits in a row.

SIGN #33. HALT – Right Turn – Forward
K9Rally Video:
https://youtu.be/jfPopZt5ZlE
Description: While heeling, the handler halts and the dog sits in heel position.  The handler and dog turn right together and heel forward. (Stationary)

Notes: Keep your dog with you on this turn by saying "heel" before you turn.  Dogs tend to lag.

SIGN #8. About “U” Turn
K9Rally Video:
https://youtu.be/461WAJ930HE
Description: 180° turn to the left.
Notes: While heeling, the team make a 180 degree turn to the handler’s left. Keep dog in heel position.  Dogs tend to forge in this exercise. If your dog pushes you out, your dog is crowding you and it will be penalized. Keep dog in heel position.  This is a turn, not a pivot.

SIGN #34. HALT – Left Turn – Forward

K9Rally Video: https://youtu.be/5IQxTMYdaVk

Description:  While heeling, the handler halts and the dog sits in heel position.  The handler and dog turn left together and heel forward. (Stationary)

Notes: Keep your dog with you on this turn by saying "heel" before you turn.  Dogs tend to forge or bump you.

SIGN #9. 270° RIGHT TURN
K9Rally Video:
https://youtu.be/8isow01aW3Q
Description: While heeling, the dog and handler make a tight 270° turn to the right.
Notes: The team makes a 270 degree turn to the handler’s right. 270-degree turns are performed as a tight circle, but not around the exercise sign.  Keep dog in heel position.  Dogs tend to lag in this exercise.
